We stopped somewhere near either Les Chapieux or nearby Bonneval (my memory is playing tricks on me) and had a picnic of bread, cheese and amazing butter that we'd bought from a farm just down the hill - we walked past the cows, complete with bells around their necks, when we knocked at the farm door and it was all pretty special. The weather was superb, too - clear blue skies on an October day - which probably helped! I'm a bit of a sucker for alpine D roads and this one fit the bill to perfection - stunning scenery, little traffic, that real sense of being on the "rooftop of the world".
